Odor Memories: The First Sniff Counts

A new study which combined associative memory tests with functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain has identified a potential neural correlate of the special association that is formed when an odor is first paired with a visual object. Odor memories in humans are likely to be processed by a separate memory system with distinctive features that make odor memories different from visual o...

Learning: The Good, the Bad, and the Fly

Olfactory memories can be very good-your mother's baking-or very bad-your father's cooking. We go through life forming these different associations with the smells we encounter. But what makes one association pleasant and another repulsive? Work in deep areas of the Drosophila brain has revealed the beginnings of an answer, as reported in this issue of Neuron by Owald et al. (2015).

Behavioral and neural plasticity caused by early social experiences: the case of the honeybee

Cognitive experiences during the early stages of life play an important role in shaping future behavior. Behavioral and neural long-term changes after early sensory and associative experiences have been recently reported in the honeybee. This invertebrate is an excellent model for assessing the role of precocious experiences on later behavior due to its extraordinarily tuned division of labor b...

Biosolids and Odor

Even those people who regard municipal biosolids as a wonderful resource would be hard pressed to classify their odor as innocuous. For those who question the safety of biosolids, their odor is proof that beneficial use of biosolids is an unsafe practice. There are two important aspects to this contentious issue, the particular aromas of biosolids. The first relates to how people perceive odors...

The chemosensory functions of taste and smell play a vital role in human physiology. They determine the flavor and palatability of foods and beverages, the selection of nutrients essential for life, and the warning of fire, toxic vapors, and spoiled foodstuffs. The hedonic role of chemosensation is experienced daily by everyone. Alterations in these pleasurable sensations have serious implicati...
